Cathedral Parish of St.Simon and St.Jude, Iqaluit
Diocese of The Arctic
Anglican Church of Canada

The Anglican Cathedral of St.Jude was one of the bright stars in the realm of cathedrals. It was built in the round, like an igloo, fitting perfectly into the culture of the Inuit of Northern Canada, amongst whom it is sited.
It was destroyed by a fire in November of 2005. To see pictures of the destruction created by the arsonist, click here on "Cathedral", including a delightful story of the building of the original Cathedral of St.Jude in the far north.
The cross behind the Altar was of narwhal tusks. The pulpit was a qamutiq (an Inuit snow sled), as was also the Altar Rail. The banners were from a number of parishes in the diocese.
A major plan for the entire Diocesan family is to replace the destroyed cathedral with a new larger St. Jude's Cathedral to mimic the natural environment of snowdrifts. This will enable us to host more outreach programs and community gatherings, and will be a spiritual home for the thousands of Anglicans across the Diocese of the Arctic.
